Buddy Poppies - Among all the flowers that evoke the memories and emotions of war is the red poppy, which became associated with war after the publication of a poem written by Col. John McCrae of Canada. The poem, "In Flander's Field," describes blowing red fields among the battleground of the fallen. For more than 75 years, the VFW's Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents. The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922, becoming the first veterans' organization to organize a nationwide distribution. The poppy soon was adopted as the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. It was during the 1923 encampment that the VFW decided that VFW Buddy Poppies be assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work to provide them with some form of financial assistance. The plan was formally adopted during the VFW's 1923 encampment. The next year, disabled veterans at the Buddy Poppy factory in Pittsburgh assembled VFW Buddy Poppies. The designation "Buddy Poppy" was adopted at that time. In February 1924, the VFW registered the name "Buddy Poppy" with the U.S. Patent Office. A certificate was issued on May 20, 1924, granting the VFW all trademark rights in the name of Buddy under the classification of artificial flowers. The VFW has made that trademark a guarantee that all poppies bearing that name and the VFW label are genuine products of the work of disabled and needy veterans. No other organization, firm or individual can legally use the name "Buddy" Poppy. Today, VFW Buddy Poppies are still assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA Hospitals. The minimal assessment (cost of Buddy Poppies) to VFW units provides compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provides financial assistance in maintaining state and national veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home for orphans and widows of our nation's veterans. And now, the Poem:In Flander's Field by John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved and now we lie, In Flanders Fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe To you, from failing hands, we throw, The torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us, who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders Fields If you need to talk to someone about an Americanism Event or program please contact Brian Hughes at 601-620-9942 or the Post at 601-582-9314 or Joyce Fulford at 601-268-3903. VFW NATIONAL HOME FOR CHILDRENJay English, ChairmanThe National Home for Children has helped countless families with the care of their children while the family member or members have been deployed. Many Military families are unaware that they may obtain help from the home. This safe and secure temporary home may be just what the family needs. If you know of the existence of such a situation, then you may obtain further information from the VFW National Home at 1-517-663-7012 or the National Home Hotline at 1-800-312-4200. As a fundraiser for the home, tickets are available now for the New Silver Dollar Coin drawing. Also, we have added a couple Silver Certificates to the drawing. MILITARY ORDER OF COOTIE Jim Darrah, Cootie Editor Pup Tent Number 7 The Pup Tent 7 Scratch on 11 March was chaired by our newly elected Most Insignificant Seam Squirrel, Cecil Johnson, assisted by his even more insignificant lousey staff: Hide Gimlet: Bennie Smith; CCDB: Joe Harrington; Keeper of the Lousey Records: Ron Clark; Shyster: Matthew Hamilton; Sky Pilot: Don Knott; Pill Pusher: Bill Perkins; and Tightwad (3 yr): Frank Broome. With one unremarkable exception, these Shavetails were installed at a most memorable ceremony held on Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Post 3036; which followed a catered luncheon of assorted delicacies. It is with great pleasure we report the retrieval of our exalted and cherished Medal of Honor, which, despite having been subjected to no little degree of partisan abuse, was promptly awarded to Ryan Serrano, with specific instructions to exceed previously donated honors to the Medal. Further desecration of our hallowed symbol will be dealt with most appropriately. Ryan will be leaving in early May to report to a new assignment at Ft Jackson, SC. In spite of stringent rules against such, another sorry incident of hat theft occurred at the scratch. On top of that, someone ratted on someone else who wasn't guilty. Due to lax security, a measly fine was imposed. Unfortunately, income to the Pup Tent from fines reached an all time low due to exceedingly coothful behavior by the Nits. The Most Insignificant Seam Squirrel took a dim view of this. Cecil Johnson conducted the drawing for the door prize, a prized patriotic antique wall clock, which was lost by Sky Pilot Don Knott. The next scratch is to be held on Thursday, 15 April, whether or not all Cooties have dutifully paid their taxes.
