FROM THE COMMANDER By: Pete Schwingle, Commander VFW Medal Update: Two major events have occurred since the last Scuttlebutt was delivered. First the State Convention took place from 25 thru 27 June at the Ramada Inn 49 @ Gulfport MS. Incoming Commander In Chief Richard L. Eubanks was present and made a big impression on most that met him. VFW Post 3036 was presented All State Awards and many other awards. Elections for the incoming officers for the Dept. MS were held and the new Commander for Dept. MS is B. J. Lott of Post 3036 Hattiesburg. Sr. Vice Cmdr. is David B. Mason of Greenville MS and Jr. Vice Commander is James Chapman of Lake Cormorant, MS. The incoming Dept. VFWA Madame President is Marie Bangs from District 1 Area. The second event was the Council of Admin. Meeting that took place on the 24th and 25th of July. Property disposal was the main subject covered. . FROM THE TROOP CARE PACKAGE PROGRAMBy: Bill Perkins, Program Chairman A Caring Gift VFW Post 3036 shipped 24 packages to Afghanistan this past month at a cost of $1,117.00. Thanks to Smokey Stover and my family members Erin and Brenda who helped make this possible. These packages and the most of what will be shipped the rest of this year or at least until Christmas will be going to the 287th. EN MAC who are in Afghanistan. This Unit calls home Lucedale, and as there is no VFW Post in Lucedale 3036 and 9122 and a couple of other post will be taking care of this Unit. We have already shipped them about 50 packages and 30 cushions for their MG-31 vehicles; as per their request. Letters are posted on the Post Bulletin Board. Primary contact for this unit is SSG Freddie Cagle.
THE HONOR GUARD PROGRAMBy: Lennie Majszak, Program Chairman With Honor During the month of July we performed 8 Funerals ; volunteers donated 116 man-hours and 1,403 miles. Performing these ceremonies were Lenny Majszak, Howell Purvis, Bennies Smith, Hulon Cameron, Smokey Stover, Edwin Bodie, J.D. Runnels,Robert White, Frank Broom, Larry Holmes, Chuck Singleterry and Jimmy Mordica. Thanks guys for a job well done, and especially for the two old Iwo Jima Veterans, Jim Bourne and Alton Mooney. Their last battle has been fought. The Families of both have expressed their gratitude.

RED CROSS COORDINATORBy: Raylawni Branch Coordinator  WWII Red Cross Poster During the past months, Camp Shelby troops and personnel were given National Military Service Pamphlets and briefed on VFW and Red Cross Services. Remember, In addition to supporting the military, the American RED CROSS has the primary responsibility to help prepare communities for emergencies and keep people safe every day thanks to caring people who support our work. So please, support your American Red Cross as a volunteer and as a financial supporter. Thanks!
VA HOSPITAL TRANSPORT PROGRAMBy: Jay English, Program Chairman  We depart at 7:15 AM Veterans need not call for reservations. Veterans needing to ride the bus can no longer make reservations. Just come to the VFW Post 3036 parking lot to catch the bus by 7:00 AM. The loading policy will be on a first-come-first-served basis. The bus capacity is 14 and the first 14 patients to arrive will have priority. During the month of July the bus transported 42 patients, drove 1,157 miles and made 6 trips to the VA Hospital in Jackson and served as a shuttle for Wesley once. The bus departs VFW Post 3036 @ 7 AM sharply and the first 14 there will be furnished transportation. Thanks to all the drivers. Again, to our volunteer drivers: thanks for helping us live up to our adopted motto of "Honoring the Dead by Caring for the Living." NOTE: We are in dire need of more volunteer drivers. VFW NATIONAL HOME FOR CHILDRENJay English, Chairman The National Home for Children has helped countless families with the care of their children while the family member or members have been deployed. Many Military families are unaware that they may obtain help from the home. This safe and secure temporary home may be just what the family needs. If you know of the existence of such a situation, then you may obtain further information from the VFW National Home at 1-517-663-7012 or the National Home Hotline at 1-800-312-4200. As a fundraiser for the home, tickets are available now for the New Silver Dollar Coin drawing. Also, we have added a couple Silver Certificates to the drawing. The drawing will be held at our next membership meeting. The coins and silver certificates are displayed in the Post Canteen. Cabins for Rent At our Recreation Center, we have three (3) good fishing lakes, two (2) furnished cabins available for short-term lease, and covered outdoor picnic facilities to include a small restaurant which is fully furnished.
